Canada Supports Flood Victims in the Philippines

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Ottawa, Ontario―Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced that Canada is providing immediate humanitarian assistance, such as food, clean water, shelter and non-food relief items, to the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Tropical Storm Washi in the Philippines.
"Canada extends its condolences to those who have lost friends and family with the onset of the storm and sudden floods in the Philippines," said Minister Oda. "We commend the local communities, non-governmental organizations, and the Government of the Philippines for their rapid response. Today, Canada is responding to calls for needed supplies and further assistance to help those affected restore their strength and livelihoods."

Recent reports indicate the storm displaced more than 500,000 people in 13 provinces of the country. The Government of the Philippines undertook a major emergency rescue, evacuation and relief response operation in southern Philippines.

Canada's response, through the Canadian International Development Agency, will support the efforts of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Oxfam Canada in the affected area.

The IFRC will provide safe water, food and non-food relief items to 5,000 families currently in emergency evacuation centres. WFP will provide immediate lifesaving food assistance to approximately 220,000 people and targeted distribution of high-energy food to 15,000 children under five. IOM will provide emergency shelter repair kits, which include items such as tarps, lumber and ropes, for as many as 23,550 families and non-food relief items, including essential household items, for 47,000 affected families. Oxfam Canada will improve access to safe water for approximately 8,000 families, as well as set up latrines and shower blocks in evacuation centres and in communities hosting evacuees.

Canada will provide up to $1.25 million to carry out this work. Canada will also continue to monitor the situation closely and will respond to further humanitarian needs as appropriate.

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ON THE DEATH OF KIM JONG-IL

Boxing Week Preview at Sears.ca! Check out the savings at Sears.ca! StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of Kim Jong-il:

“Kim Jong-il will be remembered as the leader of a totalitarian regime who violated the basic rights of the North Korean people for nearly two decades.

“We hope his passing brings positive change allowing the people of North Korea to emerge from six decades of isolation, oppression and misery. The regime's reckless decisions have resulted in North Korea being an impoverished nation and a country isolated from the international community because of its dangerous nuclear proliferation and ballistic missile programs.

“At this critical juncture, we urge North Korea to close this sad chapter in its history and to work once more towards promoting both the well-being of its people and stability on the Korean peninsula."

Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Violence in Egypt

Boxing Week Preview at Sears.ca! Check out the savings at Sears.ca! StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-TORONTO— Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the recent violence in Egypt:

“The latest violence against citizens protesting outside of the Prime Minister's office in Egypt is a great source of concern. Images of women being beaten in the streets and shots fired into crowds of protesters cannot be tolerated, and we must not see a repeat of the violence against the Coptic Christian community. The Liberal Party stands with the international community in condemning the excessive use of force. The Egyptian government and the military must take responsibility for their actions and show accountability in protecting its citizens. As the third and final round of electoral voting in Egypt draws closer, we hope that the military council will set a date for the presidential elections and work to move power to civilian authorities.

On behalf of the Liberal Party and our Parliamentary Caucus, I extend my condolences to the families of those who have been affected by the ongoing violence.”

CANADA AND U.S. AGREE ON JOINT ACTION PLANS TO BOOST SECURITY, TRADE AND TRAVEL

7 December 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets with U.S. President Barack Obama in the Oval Office at the White House prior to announcing the Border Action Plan

7 December 2011Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Barack Obama, U.S. President, announce the Border Action Plan

StarBuzz Toronto: WASHINGTOND.C. – Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama announced today that Canada and the United States have agreed to implement two action plans designed to speed up legitimate trade and travel, improve security in North America, and align regulatory approaches between the two countries.

“Billions of dollars worth of goods and hundreds of thousands of people cross our shared border every day,” said Prime Minister Harper.  “Moving security to the perimeter of our continent will transform our border and create jobs and growth in Canada by improving the flow of goods and people between our two countries.

The Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competiveness focuses on four areas of cooperation: addressing threats early; facilitating trade, economic growth and jobs; integrating cross-border law enforcement; and improving critical infrastructure and cyber-security.

We are pursuing an ambitious global trade agenda, while at the same time ensuring enhanced access to the United States, our largest and most important trading partner, said Prime Minister Harper.  “Together, these agreements represent the most significant step forward in Canada-U.S. cooperation since the North American Free Trade Agreement.”

The Action Plan on Regulatory Cooperation will help reduce barriers to trade, lower costs for consumers and business, and create economic opportunities on both sides of the border. It identifies 29 initiatives where Canada and theU.S. will align their regulatory approaches in the areas of agriculture and food, transportation, health and personal care products, chemical management, the environment, and other cross-sectoral areas, while not compromising our health, safety or environmental protection standards.

“This Action Plan on Regulatory Cooperation will break down regulatory barriers and will make it easier for our firms and manufacturers to do business on both sides of the border,” added the Prime Minister.

The two action plans respect the sovereignty of both countries and specify they will work together to promote the principles of human rights, privacy and civil liberty essential to the rule of law and the effective management of our perimeter.

As the action plans are implemented, the Government will consult with Parliament and Canadians and keep them informed of progress.

Detailed backgrounders on each area of cooperation and what the initiatives will mean are available at www.borderactionplan.gc.ca.
