Happy Anniversary: Toronto Car Tax Died One Year Ago

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2011) - Tomorrow, car owners will celebrate the one year anniversary of Toronto City Hall ending its "War on Cars". On December 16, 2010, Toronto City Council voted to kill the Personal Vehicle Tax - better known as the Toronto Car Tax - that unfairly targeted car owners. Families will no longer have to pay $64 million in taxes each and every year for simply owning a car.

The Toronto Automobile Dealers Association congratulates Mayor Ford and those councillors who voted to repeal the Toronto Car Tax. This was an important victory for families in what has been Toronto City Hall's fascination with the "war on cars" under the previous administration. Mayor Rob Ford made eliminating the Toronto Car Tax a key component of his 2010 campaign platform that elected him as Toronto's 64^thMayor.
Quotes
"Mayor Rob Ford understands the family car is a necessity for families to run their lives. The Toronto Automobile Dealers Association applauds Mayor Ford for killing the Toronto Car Tax that unfairly targeted the family car."
- Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations
Toronto Automobile Dealers Association
"The City of Toronto's $774 million budget deficit is the direct result of reckless and out-of-control spending. Mayor Ford is doing the right thing by reducing expenses to reign in the budget deficit - instead of taking the easy way out by taxing families for owning a car."
- Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations
Toronto Automobile Dealers Association
Facts
• The Personal Vehicle Tax (PVT) was eliminated by City Council at its first full meeting on December 16, 2010
• Eliminating the PVT saves Toronto families $64 million every year
• The PVT was charged on personal vehicles registered in the City of Toronto at $60 per car and $30 per motorcycle or moped
• Since 1908, the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association has been the voice of Greater Toronto's 340 new car dealers, representing every manufacturer's brand and franchise.

Karygiannis convenes successful Multicultural/Community Stakeholder Forum in GTA

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, and Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism, today convened a successful multicultural/community stakeholder forum in the GTA.

“This was an important opportunity for representatives of several multicultural groups and community organizations to discuss their work and the challenges they face in delivering programs and services.”  said Mr. Karygiannis.  “My colleagues and I examined, with these concerned Canadians, issues with respect to the future of Canada and its global responsibilities.”

This is the third forum in a continuing series that Mr. Karygiannis will be facilitating across the country in the coming months.

“As we move forward as a country, it is important that we create an environment where all communities live in harmony.”  Mr. Karygiannis stated.  “Many times, people feel left out, unable to voice their concerns and, therefore, they are not at the table and part of the decisions being made.”

Similar outreach forums are planned for the Golden Horseshoe and other regions of Ontario in the New Year.

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-“A goal without an action plan is a day dream” Nathaniel Branden Amar Karma Organ donation society which started operations in January 2011, and at the first seminar they had presented their “map of words” with their goals and mission.

Saturday, December 10, AMAR KARMA ORGAN DONATION SOCIETY discussed the successes and accomplishments of the year 2011 at Chris Gibson Community Centre. At this final event of the year, Roxana Chirriac, Event Manager of the society presented the project map for 2012 where as Anjanie Tiwari; Provincial Volunteer Coordinator reviewed the successes of the year 2011. Some trivia games were also played to involve the volunteers of all ages and small prizes were distributed.

PARM GILL PARTNERS WITH THE TOYS-FOR-TOTS CAMPAIGN AND OUR LOCAL FOOD BANK TO GIVE BACK

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Brampton-Springdale, Ontario: The holiday season is upon us. This is a time to pause and give thanks for everything we have. It is also a perfect time of the year to spend with family, friends and loved-ones. As Canadians, we have much to be thankful for. However, not everyone is as fortunate. It is important that we give back to the community and the country that has given us so much.

“Giving back to our community and helping those around me is one of my top priorities,” said Parm Gill, Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale. “Organizing an event that partnered with the Toys-for-Tots Campaign, as well as our local food bank and brought Bramptonians together was a decision that made sense to me.”

The free skate and swim, which was held at the Century Gardens Recreation Centre, was attended by families from across the city. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring Bramptonians together in support of two very meaningful organizations. The Toys-for-Tots Campaign and our local food bank provide more than a selfless service – they provide people with joy, compassion and love. This event was a great way to kick off the holiday season with friends, family, neighbours and a special visit from Santa Clause.

“This event was a tremendous success and I was very proud to see the support from our community,” said Parm Gill. “Whether someone brought a toy for a young child to unwrap on Christmas morning or a non-perishable food item that will be part of a holiday meal – the people of this city came together in a remarkable way.”
