StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Mississauga (December 7, 2011) Newly elected Ward 5 City Councillor, Bonnie Crombie hosted a town hall last night at the Frank Mckechnie Community Centre for the residents of Ward 5 and the Britannia neighbourhoods. Councillor Crombie previously held a town hall on the proposed Pinnacle development on the corner of Eglinton and Hurontario. Last night’s town hall was an effort to fulfill the Councillor’s election commitment to be open, accessible, accountable and transparent, and to provide information to constituents in a timely fashion.
“It was great to have an opportunity to connect with the residents of Ward 5,” said Crombie. “Hearing their ideas and feedback is invigorating and re-enforces the importance of engaging the community and
giving them a voice at City Hall.”
Along with Councillor Crombie, presenters at the town hall dealt with some of the tough issues and exiting opportunities facing the city and Ward 5:
• Dorthy Tomiuk of MIRANET discussed how residents might set up a residents association and become an effective community voice;
• Kay Matthews of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association talked to business owners about setting up BIAs to promote economic development;
• Sergeant Raj Biring and Constable Sandro Strangio of the 12 Division (Peel Regional Police) and Brittany Wakefield of Safe City Mississauga, encouraged Ward 5 residents to get involved with the PCLC and take responsibility for safety in their community;
• Jacquelyn Hayward Gulati, Manager of the Cycling Office at the City of Mississauga, spoke about the new bike lanes proposed for Bristol Road and their effect on calming traffic; and
• Robyn Connolly, Manager of Community Engagement and Aleem Kanji, Manger of Public Affairs at the GTAA, discussed the GTAA’s community engagement activities and the need for ongoing citizen engagement, as well as the issue of “night flights” and airport noise.
Many residents in attendance signed up to begin the process of forming a residents’ association and were excited about the prospect of a Britannia BIA. Fostering both groups was a campaign commitment of Crombie’s during the recent by-election. The town hall meeting also featured a “Big Ideas” board where
residents were encouraged to put forward one big idea to make their community better. Councillor Crombie will review these ideas and work to give effect to some of them in the coming weeks and months. Councillor Crombie is committed to community engagement and will host regular community meetings on specific issues of concern to Ward 5 residents. Her next town hall will take place on December 12, 2011 at the Malton Community Centre and will feature some of the same presenters as the Britannia event and many more.
